8. Finland

Jungle Juice on the cusp of Eastern Europe

sunny 33 °C

Finland was interesting to us as we didnt know much about it and noticed a change in the look of the general populace quite soon - they looked more "slavic" if there is such a thing. We were also by now on the cusp of Eastern Europe. We were a bit apprehensive about Russia and comments from many of the Finns we met seemed to confirm our jitters. "you are riding from St Petersburg to Sochi!!!!!!??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..." The Finns and the Russians have never really been on good terms and were on opposite sides in WW2. Some resentment remains. I got paraletically drunk for the first time on the trip after accepting overly generous offers of Finnish jungle juice from the lovely people in the camp site. Thanks to Carol for the assistance back to the tent. We slunk out the next morning to avoid a repeat...

7. Sweden

Heading due east...

After being spoiled by Norway's scenery we were a bit "workmanlike" moving through Sweden and its very pretty countryside and beautiful Stockholm city. As beautiful as Stockholm was, we were starting to confirm the feeling that most big cities dished up shades of the same experience. In Stockholm, the local university had a freshman's day which consisted of hundreds of predictably drunk students on the backs of open trucks parading around and around...and around - not a criticism, just an observation. Made for a nice contrast to the high culture that is Stockholm.

6. Norway

Wow

We were blown away by the most stunning scenery imaginable, and in a country where it rains for 275 days a year, we were mostly lucky with the weather. Our photos can not adequatley portray the wild beauty of Norway and neither can these words.

The most stunningly beautiful country on our trip.

5. Denmark

The most egalitarian country in the world - where the gap between rich and poor is narrowest

We were excited to get into Northern Europe. We found Denmark predictably neat, pretty and friendly in a sort of restrained way...People are proud of their country and maybe just a touch suspicious of foreigners? Just an impression though. Someone did recognise our Vic plate (we didn't have an Aussie flag on the bike or our gear at that stage) and at the lights he told us he had lived in Footscray!! (a suburb of Melbourne).

4. Germany

The top left hand bit of Germany heading North

We decided not to spend too much time in Germany at this early part of the trip, rather heading North east toward Denmark, avoiding Berlin in favour of some of the smaller villages. This was the beginning of a trend for us - avoiding the big cities (unless they were "must sees") and motorways. Our GPS (my iPhone) went a bit wonky in the big CBD's and this made it very difficult (and stressful!) to make our way safely and enjoyably. We had some good weather but also had a freezing cold soaking heading into Bremerhaven. Stuff the camping - we had a restaurant meal (steaming Bacon Spuds) our table standing in a pool of water dripping off our gear (my unders were soaked as well), and got directions to a good hostel not far away.
